Viront is situated far from harm’s way in the peaceful and picturesque Vista region – close to the heartlands of the Alliance, with any number of fleets no more than a day away by manifold collapse. It prides itself on being open for business, and eschews many Alliance-standard orbital defences. Nonetheless, its industrial capacity and economic weight is such that it could easily manufacture arms and armour to suit any defensive measures that it requires.

That’s how it looks from space – on the ground, the ostensibly laissez-faire attitude of Viront towards Alliance law narrows considerably around matters of public safety. GREY does not seek and would not be permitted use-of-force authorisation from the Alliance – a mutually agreed check on its governance. Instead, companies of “block wardens” are equipped by their parent syndicates to prevent and investigate breaches of Alliance law – including theft, smuggling and the open flouting of interplanetary regulations.
