Marzion IX: Clothing
Marzionites live in industrial gas mining rigs floating above a gas giant, following strict safety regulations. Personal protective gear is required even when off duty, ranging from basic emergency forcefields to knee pads or armour and backup respirators in the more dangerous rig areas. They will prioritise safety above personal flair, limiting customisations to sewn-on patches and pins, and making sure their outfits are bright enough to easily see from a distance should they get lost or trapped anywhere.
Overview
Dress code: Safe and functional is key – boiler suits, safety gear, hazmat suits, overalls. Costumes that could conceivably be uniforms, or adapted from them. A simple colour scheme is best!
Possibilities: Work-safe flair! Consider pins, nametags, badges and/or patches commemorating the team and rig you worked on before coming to the Ardent.
Avoid: Excessive ornamentation. If it could snag on a rivet, it probably wouldn’t pass muster on Marzion IX. Don’t use natural materials like fur, leather or silk, either – think about what might be easily accessible (and replaceable!) on an isolated mining rig.
Stereotypical Look: Boiler Suit
The most common Marzionite outfit is a boiler suit or work overalls with a tool belt.
- Boiler suit: a colourful one-piece or matching set of overalls, customised to match their department and role, often with light-up sections. Only security units wear black overalls, but would still have accent colours or light-up sections they could activate if they became trapped on the rig.
- Tool belt: A basic belt with pouches to keep equipment on, that can be easily removed.
- Under layers: Shirts, t-shirts, and trousers either in plain colours, or with symbols or geometric shapes.
Accessories
- Pins, nametags, badges and sewn-on patches are very popular amongst Marzionites.
- Aim to keep any accessories looking like they’re mass produced or manufactured by machine.
Makeup
- A common tattoo practice is to mark down work injuries, either in writing or illustrations (this can be technical or abstract). They can serve as a reminder to take more care, or a warning to others that failure to stick to regulations will not only hurt themselves, and to not forget why those regulations are there.
- Makeup is job oriented, using colourful basic shapes and lines to temporarily mark out who’s doing what on a work shift, and quickly organise teams.
Designing Groups
- Affiliations are linked by matching uniforms, with the same bright colours and base garment style. For temporary affiliations, bright matching makeup can be used instead, for example if a new member joins a group, all group members may opt to wear a makeup symbol to match with the new member until they can get a matching uniform.
Design Caution
- Marzion and Kessler are both themed around very industrial “homeworlds”, and can easily overlap with their costumes. Make sure to stay away from rusty, post-apoc elements, organic painted designs on your boiler suit, or armour with large spikes and scavenged parts.
- With light-up costume parts, be careful about the inclusion of LED wire. It looks very cool, but should never be against the skin, and can cause electric shocks if it’s damaged in combat.
