Earth: Clothing
Terrans are married to their work, and take pride in the fashion and uniforms of their professions – which are mostly white-collar jobs. They will look as smart as they can get away with for the situation, aiming to leave a strong and professional first impression. Earth is best known for its diplomacy, historical research and scientific study; their outfits reflect this, based around smart modern wear with a personalised flair beyond what is present in the modern office.
Overview
Dress code: Business formal – dress shirts, trousers, waistcoats, suspenders, ties. These can be futuristic or contemporary. Bright colours and sharp fits.
Possibilities: Natural patterns and symbols (like trees, waves, and clouds) on accessories will help to visually establish your character’s connection to their home planet. Earth is a (relatively) wealthy planet, so don’t hesitate when it comes to bling!
Avoid: Full formal suits, tuxedos, gowns, or other forms of evening wear. Also, while small cultural symbols and signifiers are acceptable, costumes based entirely around historical human cultures are not.
Stereotypical Look: Work Formal
The most common Terran outfit is a buttoned shirt, a jacket, and simple trousers and skirts.
- Shirt: a button down, collared shirt. This can be any colour, pattern, or material, but should not look garish with the rest of the look. More expensive shirts are made from fabrics reflecting cultural heritage; lace, silk, embroidery, printed fabric, etc.
- Jacket: commonly a plain suit jacket, blazer or waistcoat, but plain bomber jackets and similar also work so long as they cut off at the waist or thigh. This garment is usually a more subdued or dull colour, and will always compliment the shirt.
- Trousers/skirt: plain, understated garments with suitable enough mobility for the job at hand.
Accessories
- Common accessories for workwear, such as belts, glasses, wristbands and ties, should bring more personalisation to the outfit.
- Earth-specific natural materials are now very expensive, as are antiques. Terrans will want the real deal and dislike replicas. Earth gemstones are now very rare and used as a sign of status.
Makeup
- Any tattoos are personal, non-commercial, and often reflect elements of Earth; plants, animals, nature, and artwork.
- Makeup is most commonly natural and complementary tones, with eyeliner in brown, black, metal, or white.
Designing Groups
- Affiliations are linked by colour or outfit style – they won’t be wearing carbon copy outfits of each other, but don’t wish to stand out too strongly from their group. Terrans always place pride in their affiliations and planetary origin over personal pride.
Design Caution
- We don’t want a plain white shirt and black suit jacket combo to be the default outfit for Terrans. Equally, Hawaiian shirts are a very casual option, better for someone who’s off work.
- It is very easy for extravagant outfits to have a lot of crossover with cyberpunk fashion – that’s Viront’s costume style so avoid going too far in that direction.
- The main design for Earth is based on western fashions because that matches where most players are from, as well as where we’re running the game. If you wish to use items or fashion elements from other cultures, have caution that you are wearing items that are suitable for use as a costume, and respect closed cultures. Players who wish to use fashion from their own personal heritage are welcome to incorporate it into their costume.
